i’ve got so many sessions to blog! this is a family session from last fall that i absolutely loved! what can i say about this family that hasn’t already been said? i’ve been photographing them for almost 6 years now and i simply adore them. last summer they moved to dallas and you can imagine how honored i was that they chose to return to kansas city for their annual family portraits. it’s been so amazing to watch these little guys grow over the years. their beautiful mama is more like a friend than a client. one look at her and you can see why her boys are so gorgeous! this family photo session took place at our studio. i love the natural light and the beautiful wood floors here. and of course, mel had the boys dressed perfectly as always. talking to otto, i really couldn’t believe how grown up he is. if you’ve been following the hocus focus blog for a few years, you’ll remember him as mantle baby. his newborn photos were some of my favorites i’ve ever done. and then there’s hank. oh, sweet hank with those giant eyes and adorable curls. this little man can […]

Anytime Is The Right Time | My Family Portraits

Last year, my friend Deb Schwedhelm wrote a blog post and posed the following question: Is there ever a perfect time to have photographs taken of your family? I strongly encourage you to read her entire post, but in short, the answer is no. There is no perfect time. I know Deb would agree that anytime is the right time. We've both heard clients say, I'm too fat or I'm growing my hair out or I'm waiting for my son to get his braces off…and a whole slew of other reasons why NOT to have your family portraits taken.  Life is precious. Every single moment. And you never know what's around the corner so take all those reasons and excuses and throw them out the window. RIGHT. THIS. SECOND. Twenty, thirty, even forty years from now the last thing your kids and grandkids will say when they look at your family photos is, "Wow, I really wish Mom would have lost some weight before this picture was taken". I can't even begin to tell you how much I adore these boys and their amazing mama. I've been shooting them since Melanie was pregnant Otto. Most of you know him as Mantle Baby. He'll be five this year so he's definitely not a baby anymore and neither is his two year old baby brother Hank, also known as Doll Face. We had so many great shots – I could almost blog their whole session. This one just cracks me up. So Otto! Really? Total. Doll. Face. And Melanie? She's too gorgeous for words. And she's just an incredible woman with so much love for her boys.  Such a gentleman. One for his mama and one for me. Mel, it's been an amazing five years watching your boys grow and I'm looking forward to many more. Thank you for having me there to document it all.  Lots of love, H
