hometown style – my favorite kansas city tees for her life magazine

by heathermorrow· January 27, 2015· in Editorial, Her Life Magazine, Local, My Favorite Things, Shopping· 0 comments tags: baldwin, bandwagon merchandise, charlie hustle, collar for collar, exposure model and talent agency, heather morrow, her life magazine, hocus focus, kansas city hair stylist erica johnson, kansas city makeup artist paige pelfrey, kansas city shirts, kansas city tee, kc clothing, kc shirts, made in kc, model harrison quinn, normal human, ocean & sea, raygun shirts, sandlot goods
i loved kansas city before kansas city was cool and that’s probably why i had so much fun putting this shoot together. i rounded up a collection of my favorite kansas city shirts for the january issue of her life magazine. what’s even more fun is that i got to style the whole shoot too. model harrison quinn brought his own pants and shoes and much of what model paige pelfrey is wearing came from my own closet. one of the first to make my list is raygun. i’ve been buying raygun shirts online for years and i was thrilled when they opened a brick and mortar shop here in kansas city. as a native kansas citian i find that people who don’t live here are often confused by the whole kansas city, kansas/kansas city, missouri thing. there’s no better way to sum it up than with this too much city for one state tee. next up is charlie hustle. if you haven’t heard of charlie hustle, there’s a chance you’ve been living under a rock. paul rudd proudly rocked a charlie hustle shirt when our kansas city royals were in the world series and the kc heart tank i own is a […]

zuzu’s petals for her life magazine – kansas city fashion photographer

by heathermorrow· December 21, 2014· in Editorial, Models, Shopping· 0 comments tags: her life magazine, kansas city fashion, zuzu's petals
one of the things i love about shooting fashion for her life magazine is getting acquainted with all of the different boutiques in kansas city. this was the second time i’ve shot zuzu’s petals and i’ve fallen even more in love with them. owner’s melanie and linda are as sweet as can be. while i was there pulling wardrobe i couldn’t help but notice that when a customer walks in they greet them by name. they ask how their family is doing. they treat them like old friends. and if they don’t know you they go out of their way to get to know you. they’ve created such a warm, inviting atmosphere that you almost don’t want to leave. for this shoot we pulled together eight looks that i really loved. in fact, i may have bought an item or three. i bought the shorts and the wrap in the top left photo above. and i bought this great aztec tunic. i wore it throughout the summer and now i’m pairing it with jeans, leggings and even a pair of black velvet skinny pants. so many ways to wear that top! as always, we had a great crew for this […]

as i walked into garment district to pull wardrobe for an upcoming her life magazine shoot i found myself asking how on earth i’d never been in there before. i had never thought of the power and light district as a place to shop but i definitely do now. the garment district is a collective that features men’s and women’s clothing and accessories from fitness culture, frankie and jules, two chic blvd, label, scoobie, eye candy, imagery and more. you know me and my inability to shoot without shopping. i ended up buying this outfit from fitness culture. these eco-conscious teeki pants are made of 79% recycled plastic. they’re super soft and wash and wear so well. the kc garment collective is located in the power and light district at 1350 main street, kansas city, mo 64105 model maggie mackey of exposure, inc. hair by leslee weers of salon spice makeup by heidi bowles

hello, blog! it’s been a while and i have a lot to share. first up is a really fun (but cold) swimwear solution shoot i did for her life magazine this spring. you wouldn’t know it by looking at these photos but it was only 40 degrees (and super windy) the day we shot. our gorgeous model was such a trooper…never complaining and working so hard to pull off every shot i wanted to get. we had her wrapped in heavy blankets to keep warm between shots. if you haven’t been to swimwear solution, i highly recommend it. located at hawthorne plaza in overland park, it has become my go to shop for swimwear. the staff works so hard to help you find the perfect fit, their selection is amazing and they’re having a great sale now through july 31 that you won’t want to miss. stop by, tell them i sent you in and have fun shopping! swimwear solution, 4845 west 119th street, overland park, ks 66209 model ainslie stern of exposure, inc. hair by leslee weers of salon spice makeup by paige pelfrey

by heathermorrow· September 12, 2013· in Editorial, Her Life Magazine, My Favorite Things, Shopping, Style· 0 comments tags: brenda watts, donna's dress shop, double take salon, her life magazine, jewelry, melissa evans, sara cramer
by now you may have seen the september issue of her life magazine featuring the stunning sara cramer on the cover. sara is the designer and creator of the amazing jewelry you see her wearing on the cover. i’ve peeped a lot of jewelry in my day and i’ve never seen anything even close to what sara creates. this is a shoot i was really excited about. one of the things i love most about shooting for her life magazine is that i get to connect with so many incredible kansas city women. sara is a powerful and inspiring female entrepreneurs. it’s so nice to meet other females who are following their passion and making a living doing what they love. we started off at sara’s crossroads live/work studio where brenda watts of double take salon did hair and melissa evans did makeup. while sara was being prepped for the shoot i couldn’t help but gawk at the beautiful collection of jewelry that fills her studio. it’s more than just jewelry – it’s art. art that pulls you in with it’s beautiful patterns, each created by hand. the piece that sara wore for the cover took over a week to produce, each […]

ashley phelps for her life magazine

by heathermorrow· August 04, 2013· in Editorial, Families, Her Life Magazine, What to Wear for Family Portraits· 0 comments tags: ashley phelps, clique boutique, doubletake salon, her life magazine, jetcouture jewels, melissa evans, pkd, polycystic kidney disease
wow, am i behind in blogging…but what’s new? i loved shooting the july 2013 cover of her life magazine. cover girl ashley phelps is living with polycystic kidney disease but she’s fighting hard to kick it to the curb. ashley and i visited our friends at clique boutique to select her wardrobe and then, because i love styling almost as much as photographing, we hit h&m and picked up wardrobe for the rest of the family. by the way, did you hear you can now shop h&m online and that they’ve launched a crazy cool home collection? anyway, back to ashley…based on ashley’s outward appearance one might never know that she is sick. or just how sick she is. she’s endured numerous surgeries, seizures, a collapsed lung, an aneurysm and lives with a tremendous amount of pain. on a scale of one to ten, her pain is at a level of seven to eight most days. SEVEN to EIGHT! i’m the mom of two girls ages 9 and 10. i’m perfectly healthy and some days it’s a challenge for me to keep up with them. thinking of the challenges ashley faces in keeping up with and caring for her 3 […]

clique boutique for her life magazine

have you seen the june issue of her life magazine? it features a fashion shoot i’m really proud of. the stars were most definitely aligned on this one and it all came together just the way i wanted.  the impeccable wardrobe is from clique boutique in prairie village. i was able to book model angela lyman from exposure, inc.. we had our usual dream team of makeup artist melissa evans and hair stylist crystal wisniewski from soffia via. we shot at what is seriously the cutest little coffee shop in all of kansas city – hi hat coffee in westwood. and i even sweet talked my friend tricia in to assisting me. thanks, tricia! here’s a little breakdown of each look. on the left is a white + warren sleeveless dress with a turquoise necklace (that i’m coveting so hard) by jetcouture jewels, formerly known as jet lag jewels. (my anniversary is coming up…hint, hint, mr. morrow!) and on the right is the trina turk sangria dress with vintage pearl hoops and a bracelet, both from 74 harley street. jetcouture jewels and 74 harley street are lines i adore and both are designed and produced right here in kansas city! how can you not love this pink […]

on the other side of the camera – girls on the run for her life magazine

by heathermorrow· May 15, 2013· in Editorial, Her Life Magazine, My Peeps· 0 comments tags: girls on the run, hairstylist alli cox, hairstylist carli cunningham, her life magazine, makeup artist drew proud, makeup artist heidi bowles, makeup artist melissa evans, runners, running program for girls
the may issue of her life magazine features five kansas city girls on the run coaches and their daughters and for this issue i had the chance to be on both sides of the camera. i photographed four amazing women and their daughters and then had the camera turned on me. i can’t think of a better mother’s day gift than to be featured on the cover of a magazine with my two favorite girls. this week i will wrap up my fourth season as a girls on the run coach and i’m more passionate about the program than ever before. an experience based running program for 3rd – 8th grade girls founded by molly barker in 1996, the mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. girls on the run is building strong young women from the inside out. a year ago, thanks to one of the girls on the run activities our team completed, we discovered that rilee was being bullied and it was devastating. i can honestly say that if it weren’t for this program we most likely wouldn’t have known it was happening. girls on the run gave us both the tools to handle this really […]
