happy habitat by karrie kaneda

by heathermorrow· October 17, 2013· in Babies and Kids, Commercial and Editorial, Local, My Favorite Things, Shopping, Style· 1 comments tags: american made, bohemian picnic, eco-friendly, happy habitat, karrie kaneda, martha stewart, moroccan tea party, tee pee
i have to say i’m really proud to be from kansas city. so many amazing things are happening here and some of them seemingly in my own back yard. karrie kaneda, a fellow roeland park resident, is the designer behind happy habitat, a line of eco-friendly pillows, throws and baby blankets. karrie was recently in the running for the martha stewart american made contest so we put together an amazing lifestyle shoot to showcase her products. karrie designs each pattern herself and the products are as luxurious as they are beautiful. her daughter phoebe was the perfect model for our moroccan themed tea party. phoebe and her brother reese loved spending time in the tee pee we constructed with bamboo sticks and some of our favorite happy habitat throws. most of my readers know gina. she’s the incredible makeup artist/hair stylist behind so many of my senior portrait sessions but what they don’t know is that gina is just a good in front of the camera as she is behind it. i’ve wanted gina in front of my camera ever since i met her and i was thrilled that she agreed to model for us. she and her darling kids were […]

fashion (and photography) outside the box

by heathermorrow· August 20, 2012· in Commercial and Editorial, Models, My Favorite Things, Shopping· 2 comments tags: 3house boutique, fashion photography
everyone knows i love photography and shopping. especially shopping at 3house boutique. everything about 3house is outside the box. with so many boutiques popping up, failing and closing i’ve noticed that they all have one thing in common – there’s no originality. what i love about 3house is that i won’t buy something there and see it at 72 other boutiques in town. the girls at 3house eat, sleep and breathe fashion and they do it all with amazing style. when cassi called and asked me if i had any availability to do a shoot for them i was giddy. i’ve worked her before when i shot 3house for her life magazine. that shoot was really fun, but i have to say this one was even better. cassi had a specific vision for this shoot. even the way i shot (and processed) was outside the box for me and it felt so good to be there. our models, katie and chante, were amazing! hair and makeup by my favorite gal, melissa evans. thanks to my dear friend kristi for assisting me and to cassi at 3house for pushing me outside the box with regard to both photography and fashion. stay tuned […]

lauren wants to know

by heathermorrow· July 29, 2012· in Commercial and Editorial, Models, Shopping, Studio· 5 comments tags: her life magazine, lauren mccarthy, lauren wants to know, mccarthy auto group
if there are two things i love to photograph they are red hair and freckles, but there are so many more things i loved about photographing lauren mccarthy. her sparkling personality is at the top of the list. you can’t be in a room with lauren and not smile. you just can’t. she’s got a knack for digging in her heels (the fabulous kind, of course) and getting to know people, which is probably why her lauren wants to know campaign for mccarthy auto group is such a huge success. lauren is showing the women of kansas city just how easy buying a car can and should be. i photographed lauren for the august issue of her life magazine, which is on stands now. we shot at the studio where talk ranged from cars to careers and our common love of old school hip hop and all things fashion. and speaking of fashion, our sweet friends at 3house boutique were kind enough to style lauren for our shoot and the always fun melissa evans joined us for hair and makeup. i built this next backdrop specifically for my shoot with lauren but it’s become wildly popular among our clients and […]

swimwear solution for her life magazine

by heathermorrow· July 06, 2012· in Commercial and Editorial, Models, Shopping· 0 comments tags: envy salon, exposure inc., her life magazine, kansas city fashion photography, melissa evans, melissa richardson, nicole davis, swimsuit shopping, swimwear solution
have you seen the current issue of her life magazine? the july 2012 trendsetter is swimwear solution. having never photographed swimwear before, i was really excited about the possibilities for this fashion shoot. i wasn’t necessarily excited about our 6:00am call time, but our model, melissa, and the hair and makeup team were all troopers and that beautiful sunrise light was sooooo worth waking up and leaving the house before starbucks even opened. (by the way, shouldn’t that be against the law?) makeup artist melissa evans gave our model that signature sun-kissed summer glow and hair stylist nicole davis really rocked out her amazing hair. aren’t these two retro-inspired swimsuits fabulous? i loved the striped coral cover up and how flirty is this floral tankini? neon is so hot for summer and these two bikinis are no exception. my favorite swimsuit, the purple betsey johnson bikini, paired with the brushed gold necklace and earrings made for my favorite shot of the day. if you know me or have ever shot with me you can only imagine the squeal i let out as i clicked the shutter on this close-up. melissa is just so fierce! and seriously…who knew kansas city had […]

Her Life Magazine August Trendsetter | Clique Boutique

by heathermorrow· August 02, 2011· in Commercial and Editorial, Models, Shopping· 0 comments tags: 74 harley street, clique boutique, exposure inc., heather morrow, her life magazine, herlife, hocus focus, jet lag jewels, kansas city fashion, kansas city fashion photographer, kansas city photographer, kansas photographer, me&ro, melissa evans, melissa evans makeup artist, missouri photographer, prairie village shopping center, the village shops, trendsetter
It's finally August and I can share another Her Life Magazine Trendsetter shoot with everyone. I swear the wait from shoot to publication time nearly kills me.  The August issue features Clique Boutique, a lovely little gem in the The Village. Clique is relatively new so I stopped in a couple of weeks before the shoot to check it out. I hadn't even make it in the door before my jaw hit the floor. Clique is filled with racks of stunning dresses and shelves of amazing handbags, but the jewelry…oh the gigantic, glorious jewelry, was what really pulled me in. (This is where we insert our first Rachel Zoe I DIE moment.) I'm such a jewelry hound and for me the bigger and bolder, the better. This first piece from Jet Lag Jewels was insane!  Loved the earrings from 74 Harley Street and the Jet Lag Jewels bracelet. And this 74 Harley Street Necklace was amazing. Rachel Zoe would definitely die. TWICE.  Clique also carries Me&Ro, which I love.  And then there's the Jet Lag Jewels turquoise necklace. Can you ever have too much turquoise? Don't answer that.  This leather cut-out dress was amazing! I wish I would have taken a close-up. The detail […]

I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am to be shooting for Her Life Magazine again! Her Life is a local women's magazine all about keeping women connected and throughout the year and a half I shot for them I made some truly amazing connections. I met and photographed so many incredible, inspirational women whom I still keep in touch with today.  This time around I'm shooting the Her Life Trendsetter. I love fashion and I love working with models so Trendsetter is a perfect fit for me. I'll be alternating months with my dear friend and fellow photographer Tracy Routh. When I'm not shooting I'll be assisting her and vice versa. Tracy and I have know each other for years. We work so well together and it's so fun to collaborate on shoots like this. Here are the images that appear in the June issue along with a few other favorites. (And don't think for two seconds that I didn't go buy these shoes after our shoot. LOVE THEM!) Who Doesn’t Love to Shop? | Keeping It Local

by heathermorrow· July 27, 2010· in Around Town, Commercial and Editorial, Local, Seniors, Shopping· 0 comments tags: build kansas city, kansas city photographer, keep it local, senior portraits, standard style
My 2010 seniors had style like no others.  Every year I continue to be both amazed and inspired by these girls and their sense of style, each one unique and fabulous in her own way.  We always have conversations about where certain pieces of their wardrobe are from and often times the answer is Standard Style Boutique, a local boutique where I also love to shop. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to shoot Emily Baldwin of Standard Style for Her Life Magazine.  I loved shooting Emily for many reasons.  Of course, there's her outward beauty that immediately catches your eye and then there's her undeniable sense of style, but this woman really is a creative force to be reckoned with.     Emily and her husband Matt have brought high fashion to our city through their two boutiques, their line of baldwin denim, and they're raising awareness on the importance of giving back to those in our community by shopping local.  They're the ones behind Build Kansas City, an inspiring movement encouraging folks to shop local, eat local and spend local – a concept I truly believe in. Build Kansas City from Standard Social on Vimeo. If […]

I Heart Sparkly Stuff

by heathermorrow· April 30, 2009· in Commercial and Editorial, Models, My Favorite Things, Shopping· 0 comments
Most of what I've been blogging lately is stuff I shot last fall, but never got around to posting during the madness of the holidays.  These were shot for Her Life Magazine.  The jewels from Tivol, Especially Jewelry and The Polished Edge were TO DIE FOR!  And I got to shoot The Fabulous Wannette, from Exposure, Inc.  I'd been wanting to shoot her forever and we had a blast.  Can't wait to shoot her again.  (Call me next time you're in town, lady!) I told you they were gorgeous!  Now wipe the drool from your chin and get back to what you were doing.  Until next time, H

ROCK ON Update : Beth Foraker on Fox 4

by heathermorrow· November 24, 2008· in Commercial and Editorial, My Favorite Things, News· 1 comments
For some reason I always miss the Her Life Magazine segments that air on Fox 4 News at noon on Mondays, but I'm so thankful for the genius that is the internet. Fox 4 put today's segment on their website so check out the interview with Beth Foraker (also known as David Cook's mom). It's so crazy to see my cover shots on TV!  Beth looked amazing and gave a great interview.  I admire her so much for her dedication to her children.  She's such a loving, supportive mom.
